Mud god

Thursday, January 8th, the fourth grade class used a free period (computer class without computers) to play in the mud. Then today and Friday they used the same period to parade around with a box with a hole on the top and “Donations” on the side. Asoke informed me this was all my fault.

Is it damning to give a god bunny-ears?
I made an offhand comment a couple days ago about the bleakness of the classrooms and that the students should decorate the walls. I was merely thinking aloud that their class would look better with their drawings and artwork on display.

First, Shuva brought in an aloe plant. Then came the mud thing. The whole class gathered mud together and molded it to make a squat, bowling-pin figure. It was decorated, a tikka was applied, and a god was born. What you are looking at in the pictures is the mud incarnation of Krishna, iconically stuffing his face with a block of curd.

Krishna got them really going. Today’s donations are for buying streamers and posters to put up in the class. Asoke let it go on, and I think they collected a decent amount of rupees. Heath was leading charge, so we will see if this decorative spark will last, or if Heath ends up with a bunch of candy tomorrow. Either way, I’m excited to see students take an initiative and smear some creativity around the school.

Does this really look like a face that would embezzle
school donations?

uh-oh.
